She'd moved closer to him to once again use the laptop. Apologizing for being a pest, which he'd not even thought that, she explained she just needed to know what the actual message was - apparently more than meets the eye. He watched as she highlighted the entire page and sure enough there was another message cleverly concealed by the background color. He'd have to remember that one. She'd piqued his interest now.

Sam read the hidden message. 'Silver King - killed claw - can't get out - Calico' Well that was about as clear as mud. The only 'Silver King' Sam knew of was a vacuum cleaner brand and Calico was a type and color of cloth. There was also a tourist type place called Calico Ghost Town between here and LA, that used to be a silver mining town. 'Killed claw' sounded like something pertaining to the World of Warcraft online game. For that matter, Silver King and Calico could be characters in the same game. But all of this was only speculation and meant nothing to Sam.

He looked up at her and commented, "That's a neat trick. I'll have to remember that. That message isn't very obvious either but it doesn't sound positive in any case." He watched her face to catch any expressions that might give a clue to what she wasn't saying. The feeling that she had a problem still set in the back of his mind, but she hadn't really opened up enough to re-ask that question again without sounding awkward. Not yet at least.

Sam had noticed that Julie had made an effort to catch and keep most of Dean's attention, until she sauntered off to the bar. But he'd apparently still been partially listening. No surprise there, it was always difficult to sneak stuff past Dean even when it seemed he was distracted.

After accepting his number, the waitress had introduced herself as Leah and noted the 'unusual problems' phrase. Then she said she thought she needed help. Something Sam got the feeling she didn't like having to ask for. She looked around like they usually did when they discussed exceptionally bizarre cases in public places. In a hushed tone, she began to explain the message that was from her friend Jeff.

Silver King mine near Calico. The silver mines near the tourist trap Calico Ghost Town, were off-limits to the public because they were extremely dangerous and decrepit. Sam wasn't particularly fond of tromping through abandoned mines. They tended to house nasty creatures and you had a good chance of unexpectedly changing levels. The last one that they'd been in had been inhabited by a wendigo - a very nasty creature. So if Jeff went into a mine it was no surprise that he was stuck. But not anything supernatural necessarily. And that explanation had conveniently left out the 'killed Claw' part too.

Suddenly, Leah thought better of their help and decided she'd go check and then call the cops if she needed too. Sam really didn't like that idea. Now was not the time of day to go out there by yourself no matter who you are. Actually, going out to a dilapidated mine at anytime alone was a bad idea.

"Is there someplace a little less public that you'd like to go discuss this? And I really don't think you should go out there and check it out by yourself. Those silver mines out there are closed to the public because they are dilapdated and dangerous. Definitely, not someplace to go alone at night."

Sam had decided that he'd at least help her out. It wasn't like they were in the middle of anything right now. If Dean wanted to persue a possible get together with Julie or do something else, that was ok too. Dean probably wouldn't see anything that pointed out this as something qualifying it as their particular kind of work. That too was fine. But he felt he needed to at least start helping her out. If no other reason than to be sure she stayed safe. Even if it just led to calling the cops and a rescue squad. It was at least something to do besides sitting here searching the internet.

Sam was just going to see if Dean was interested at all and suggest that all three of them could talk out back, when Dean made his statement. He had always had to deal with the parental side of Dean and it usually showed up when he least expected it. But tonight it was downright infuriating and so far completely unnecessary. He was gonna toss a glare Dean's direction but then decided against it. Never worked anyway because then Dean would just give him that 'what?' look back.

"Please excuse my brother he tends to be a mother hen at times." Sam somewhat explained Dean's attitude. "But he is right in that we need more information before actually heading out there to the mine. It's way too dangerous to go out there unprepared for the situation."

Then he looked at Dean again like 'see I know what I'm doing'.

"Dean!" Sam said it in an exasperated tone muted through clenched teeth. He knew the tone Dean used meant that there was no discussion. Dean's decision stood unless she made the appropriate choice and gave him the info he wanted. Sam set his jaw and kept his teeth tightly clenched. There was nothing else for him to say.

Sam shifted his gaze from glaring at Dean to looking expectantly at Leah. He got the feeling that Leah may well just decide to go on her own. That dealing with the two of them was too much trouble. Especially since she'd seemed like someone who hated asking for help in the first place. Sometimes Dean's protective nature really just plain pissed him off. And feeling like he was being treated like a child made it that much more infuriating.

Time seemed to stand still as he waited for Leah's answer even though it probably only took a couple of seconds. Too angry to just stand there, he took another big drink from his beer and set the bottle back down with only a slightly heavier hand than normal. Then he began to shut off the laptop and put it away. This night had started off perfectly fine and had rapidly deteriorated.
